To Make This Year End Count [S1 E10]
The end of the year is an emotional time, and it feels even more unpredictable and uncertain than ever before. In today’s episode, we cover the most important things to do that will make this end of the year count - COVID or not.
#NOREGRETS
There’s nothing worse than looking back on the last few days of school and wishing you could have done something better or differently. I’ve been there (I’ve had my fair share of rocky end-of-year send offs!), and what I’ve learned is to try to anticipate the spots where I’ll need closure. Marie and I talk about this in a few layers, but here’s the approach we feel needs to happen:
We need to find the motivation to stay engaged (as the teacher), no matter how tough. That’s what we’re here for!
Make a concise list of what you want to get out of this end of year and make a plan to make it happen.
Remember: Do not blame yourself for anyone who’s not engaged!
A few ideas to have a sentimental sense of closure include: home deliveries of cards/goody bags, creating some type of “class picture”, have students write a One Word Story
Set students up for success next year with a summer reading assignment of sorts (or try Summer reading BINGO)
2. COLLECT DATA & REFLECT
Before students leave you, take this time to collect some INVALUABLE data from them about their elearning experience as well as their experience with the year as a whole. What units did they love? What things worked really well? Which ones not so much? Here are some things you might consider putting into motion:
Write lesson notes now (like post-its on physical lesson plans)
Take note of all the things you saw and wanted to try but didn’t/couldn’t. Flip through your social media saves on your phone and make a note of exactly which ideas you want to make sure to try next year.
Survey students - what did they like? Need more of? Need differently? What would they like to see next year?
“I wish my teacher knew…” for next year?
Reflect on whole year for yourself - what worked? What to ditch?
3. LOOKING AHEAD TO SUMMER & UNPLUGGING
We know, we know…this one is always MUCH easier said than done! But you need to step back and let this whole distance learning thing and chaos of 2020 fall off your shoulders into a mountain stream somewhere. Here’s what we suggest:
What will you be reading? Take a look at our lists, print your own bookshelf, and start reading!
How can you get a change of scenery?
Make a summer bucket list for yourself without thinking about school
