To Find Supplementary Texts [S1 E16]
Today’s episode is brought to you by:
Supplementary texts are a vital part of the curriculum and how we use them is just as important. Don’t feel like you have to only use them during pre-reading! Use them to supplement a single chapter of a novel, to provide another voice to comment on a conflict that is happening in the story, and use them to provide contrast to the events or themes happening in the story, too.
Your supplementary text checklist
As you start the process of looking for text to supplement your curriculum, use this checklist below to see if the text is a good fit. Here are the roles of a supplemental text:
To support the essential question
To expand the scope of the unit (geographically, timeline, cultural)
To manage inclusivity, equity, and diversity within constraints of curriculum
To address core unit skills through close reading
