When you were in middle and high school do you remember ever starting a book and then deciding to stop reading it because you didn’t like it?
For some reason, it never occurred to us to abandon books that we weren’t interested in. Of course as adults, we do that all the time and it is something we should be talking about. Don’t get us wrong, we’re not talking about mandatory novels, but we do want to encourage lifelong readers with the help of independent choice reading.
This episode will be a continuation of last week’s episode where we had Jolene join us as a guest to talk about choice reading. Choice reading is so important because it truly helps compartmentalize the choices you have when designing units and creating reading programs. This episode will give you a clearer vision on what reading units are supposed to do on their own and what independent reading does on its own.
Organizing reading workshops may seem overwhelming and you may be wondering how you can possibly add one more thing into your schedule. We totally get that!
The truth is, these workshops are designed with minimal work with a big reward. That alone makes it worth it to try as you will be able to enjoy hearing a discussion between your students.
