accountability

Today's episode marks the last in the series we are doing on classroom management. If you didn’t catch the previous three episodes, go check those out first! You can listen to those episodes here:

We all have rules, expectations, and boundaries in our classrooms. But what do you do when a student violates those things?

Do you get worked up and kick them out of the classroom? Do you continue on and pretend like it didn’t happen? Or maybe, your answer depends on which specific student has crossed the line (guilty!).

What if there was a middle ground?

To close out the series, we’re talking about a strong belief that we have here at Brave New Teaching, which is this…true compassion is accountability.

Let’s talk about what that means.

It means that as teachers, we can show our students how much we care by holding them to a certain standard. It’s possible to build relationships with students without being a massive pushover. At the same time, we can be direct and hold students accountable without being mean.

This combination of compassion and accountability is a balance that takes time to master. It takes time, consistency, and preparation. But, when the two are able to work together, that’s when true classroom community is cultivated.

Topics Covered:

  • What we mean when we say that accountability is compassion, and compassion is accountability

  • A reminder that building relationships and trust takes time

  • How to draw lines and boundaries in your classroom, and seeing opportunities when they are violated.

  • Putting in the work ahead of time so that you can stay calm and collected when behavior challenges arise

  • Assessing in a way that is equitable, compassionate, and requires students to reflect
