As a result of the pandemic, it’s not necessarily that students are “behind” academically. It’s the social skills that have taken a hit. If we’re being honest, having well-executed classroom discussions has always been a challenge. However, now that challenge has just been elevated. Teaching teenagers how to have a thoughtful discussion, and one that may even change their opinion on the subject at hand, is tough. Most adults can’t even do it! So, today we’re going to dive into different ways to approach discussions with your students.
Our hope is that this series will help you implement classroom discussions that work for you and your specific situation. We’ll give you three different angles that will either affirm what you’re doing, reconsider what you’re doing, or make the decision to try something new. Discussion skills are just that…skills. They need to be practiced and scaffolded consistently and over time.
